A two-dimensional ®nite element drying-wetting shallow water model for rivers and estuaries
نویسندگان
چکیده
A new ®nite element model has been developed to simulate two-dimensional free surface ̄ow in rivers and estuaries. The variables of the model are the speci®c discharge and the water level. The algorithm takes into account the natural boundaries of the ̄ow, de®ned by the contour lines of zero depth, with a new approach that accepts positive and negative values for the water depth. In this way, we consider a wet or dry area when the water depth is positive or negative respectively. A 6-node triangular element and an implicit Euler scheme are respectively used for spatial and time discretization of the mathematical model. The solution procedure is based on the inexact Newton-GMRES type solver with incomplete factorization as preconditioning. The numerical results of the proposed approach are in good agreement with an analytic solution and also with the classical approach. Ó 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

An Unstructured Finite-volume Algorithm for Predicting Flow in Rivers and Estuaries
ÐA numerical algorithm is presented for the solution of geometrically challenging two-dimensional river and estuary ̄ows, based on an adaptive triangular tessellation of the ̄ow domains of interest. The governing, shallow water, equations are discretised using a ®nite volume approach embodying variable step time integrators, to yield a method that is second order accurate in both space and time...
متن کاملFastTABS Software for Evaluation of Wetlands Hydrodynamics
BACKGROUND: Rhers, reservoirs, and estuaries have been modeled for a number of years using the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers TABS numerical modeling system. TABS is a family of numerical models that can simulate hydrodynamic, sediment, and constituent transport processes in these water bodies. One of the most attractive features of the TABS system is the ability to simulate wetting and drying of...
متن کاملA wetting and drying treatment for the Runge–Kutta discontinuous Galerkin solution to the shallow water equations
This paper proposes a wetting and drying treatment for the piecewise linear Runge–Kutta discontinuous Galerkin approximation to the shallow water equations. The method takes a fixed mesh approach as opposed to mesh adaptation techniques and applies a post-processing operator to ensure the positivity of the mean water depth within each finite element. In addition, special treatments are applied ...
متن کاملHydrodynamics and transport in estuaries and rivers by the CBS finite element method
This paper presents an extension of the numerical solution of the shallow water equations by the characteristic split (CBS) finite element method to hydraulic engineering problems in estuaries and rivers. A nearly implicit version is formulated and tested and an efficient procedure to implement practical open boundary conditions in the CBS is proposed. This work includes a real numerical applic...
متن کاملTwo-Dimensional Flow Modeling as a Tool for Meso-Habitat Delineation
The Instream Flow Incremental Methodology (IFIM) and the Physical Habitat Simulation System (PHABSIM) are commonly used in the instream flow water allocation process. This methodology is based on the premise that physical habitat plays a major role in structuring fish populations and that physical habitat can be described through modeling of rivers. PHABSIM is a series of programs designed to c...
